MyBookCASE

1. I Love You Forever
This book was important to be because it showed me the importance of loving someone. I enjoyed how the book repeated itself as the child was growing up. No matter his age, the boy’s mother always repeated “I’ll love you for always. I’ll like you forever. As long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.” I just remember always liking the concept of meaning that much to someone else.

2. Oh, The Places You’ll Go
I really liked this book because it was easy to identify with. I liked being able to put myself in the place of the main character and try to figure out the places I would go. As a child, I always looked ahead to my future and my future plans. I loved this book because it allowed me to plan out the various places I could go in life.

3. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
I remember loving this book as a child. We read it in my second grade class. I really enjoyed trying to guess what would happen next in the story. After reading the book, we made our own versions of the book with partners and then shared them with the rest of the class. It was neat to see what everyone came up with.

4. The Giving Tree
I liked this book as a child because of the illustrations in it. I also liked the idea that a child could be friend a tree; it showed the importance of nature. Also, as I re-read the book when I was a little older, I realized that it portrayed childhood as a time of happiness whereas adulthood was seen as a time of responsibility.

5. The Outsiders
This was my all time favorite book as a pre-teen. I loved dissecting it in class and finding the various themes in it. I always remember the phrase “Stay Gold” from it and use it as a constant reminder to try and not grow up too fast.

Books Important for Children

From my list of books it seems as though I may not have enjoyed reading as a child. I honestly cannot remember many books that I read as a child. I love reading and used to read so many books that only these few continue to stick out. They stick out too because they are books that had a profound impact on me. I like stories that have an underlying meaning to them. I Love You Forever taught me the importance of other people. It taught me the need to let others know you care. Books provide an awesome resource for teaching kids life lessons. Books that also allow children to use their imagination are huge because it can not only help to keep them engaged, but also allow their creativity to shine through. Books like If You Give a Mouse a Cookie allow for that imagination to flourish because the children can come up with their own scenarios or try to guess what will happen next in the book. Children also get to spend quality time with someone through reading stories. Books can help children foster relationships with either one another or an adult. This can ultimately help to enhance their reading skills and promote lifelong reading.

English Curriculum

Rising standards and state testing has caused a shift in education to the focus of the English curriculum in school. With this shift in focus, it is important that the curriculum be as well rounded as possible. Having material that appeal to the students is something that needs to be provided in the classroom. These materials vary from the types of books, paper back or audio, to the different genres of the books. Books to be provided in the classroom should be diverse. Some examples of subjects to be touched are special needs, gender roles, race/ethnicity, friendship, poverty, real world issues, etc. Its important give students an opportunity in school to cover these topics; having conversations will generate ideas and opinions, and school should be a safe environment to do that. Multicultural material should also be brought into the classroom environment. As years pass and times begin to change, more students come from nontraditional backgrounds but also the nation they are living in is becoming more diverse. Pretty soon, there is not going to be a white majority in the United States. There is also no longer a real norm when it comes to families. The breadwinner-homemaker families have seemed to be far and few, where many other types of families seem to be prevailing. If the students can relate to what they're reading, then they are more likely to not only remember more of what they read but also understand their situation more. Reading about something you can relate to helps one to feel not so alone, which these days is really important for some students to know.
